This seller was advised that the stein was a contemporary reproduction and referred to the article on reproductions in the Library. Like most such listings, the advise was ignored and the seller did not respond to my e-mail. Quite a few of the regimentals listed on eBay are reproductions and are not identified as such. While they may not say that it was made circa 1900, they do show the service dates (thus implying age), call it a regimental (collectors apply this to reservist steins produced in the 1885-1915 era, otherwise it is a "reproduction regimental") and sometimes call them antique or vintage (I guess they drink cheap wine). While some antique shops take liberties with the word "antique" to apply to items from the 1950s, an item needs to be over 100 years old to be considered an antique for import purposes.
I always give the buyer the benefit of the doubt when I inform them that it is a reproduction. About half ignore my e-mail and/or do not revise their listing. I think we all know why. I think e-Bay is doing a disservice by not making the sellers correct the listing or authorizing contact with the bidders when references can be cited.
Perhaps if we could get more people to bring this to the attention of eBay, we could then get them to be more flexible in their procedures for the benefit of the buyers.
