This is an early Mettlach mark from the 1880s. Form 1526 was used for print under glaze (PUG) decorations. The decoration number for this stein is 603. The phrase on the stein is "Prosit Herr Bruder, nehmet das frische Glas zur Hand. Stosst an! Gambrinus lebe, der uns das Bier erfand!” (To your health comrade, take a fresh glass into your hand. Clink your glass! Long live Gambrinus who invented beer for us!" The sign on the wall is "paragraph 11," which is the eleventh commandment for students, keep on drinking (see the article in the Library section on Paragraph 11). The lid was by R. Wagner of Mettlach. This firm did some of the early pewter lids for Mettlach. Wagner was probably a finisher or decorating firm, although I have seen some glass steins that had the Wagner name included in the glass. I don't know if Wagner made or purchased the glass.
The Beer Stein Library lists this stein in the $150-200 range in mint condition.
