KB stands for Kilian "Karl" Beuler, an artist from Hohr, Germany. Other initials that may be found on Girmscheid steins are GK, AD and TW. While most people credit all KB steins to Girmscheid, my book on Rosskopf & Gerz also state that he worked for them. I'm not sure if any of the Rosskopf & Gerz steins contain his initials. Does anyone have an "RuG" marked stein with the initials "KB?" I am trying to contact the author to verify the source and dates. Rosskopf went out of businsess prior to WWI, thus leaving time for him to work for both firms. However, this would definitely date those Girmscheid steins as 20th century. The mark you described is no doubt prior to WWII, but the exact dates of use are not known.
The Beer Stein Library recently added a catalog of Mathias Girmscheid steins. You need to be a member to view the catalog, but some of the articles are available to non-members just by registering. He has some great catalogs so the membership is well worth the price.
