Roland Henschen did a column in the Tri-State Trader on 01/01/72 about Karl Merkelbach III. A summary of that column follows. Karl inherited a workshop when he was 26 from his father-inl-law which he expanded and formed the firm of Karl Merkelbach III in 1864. His son Julius carried on the business. Julius' first-born daughter Hilde married Josef Schilz. Frau Hilde Schliz was still the owner in 1964 and the firm was being directed by Herr Helmut Schilz (I presume her son). Assuming Julius was born in the 1860s or 1870s, his daughter Hilde would have been born in the 1880s or 1890s. Hilde was probably married prior to WWI. Because of war related problems, stein production was stopped in 1928 (not many would have been made in the war years anyway) and did not begin production again until 1952. Thus, the name Schilz probably did not appear on the steins until after WWII. Karl Merkelbach III is also operated as Schilz KG. I am not sure if there is still a firm called Karl Merkelbach III.
