I recently acquired two finely cast bronze plagues (8 l/2 x ll inches) Both contain scenes which are brewery-related, one scene featuring the traditional brewers' symbol with cask and brewery implements while the other portrays a scene of three faithful lovers of beer testing the quality of the beer by rising from their communal bench to detemine whether the bench sticks to the seats of their leather breeches while the brewmaster looks on approvingly, obviously satisfied that his efforts have once again proven to be successful. The German phrase: "Ist das Bier gut eingebrauet, klebt es, wie man's hier erschauet." re-enforces this thought. This plague bears the dates l906-l938 and the name: Dehls & Stein - Newark, N.J. The other, with only the brewers' symbol in bold relief, bears the same name but with the dates l906-l936.
Is there someone who may know whether this name refers to an American brewery in Newark, or if this name has another connotation?
