To all stein collectors,
A comparison of the Girmscheid catalog on The Beer Stein Library with the book on Rosskopf & Gerz (RuG) has posed some interesting questions. I personally have not examined any RuG steins (their mark is a sort of banner with the initials "RuG" in the center. We are seeking any collectors with a stein containing this mark to examine their steins for the initials "GK" or "KB" appearing on the body.
The RuG books states that the firm was formed in 1901 and went bankrupt during WWI. Eckhardt & Engler (E&E) started marketing steins for them in 1907. E&E bought a small kiln in 1914 and eventually bought some molds from RuG about 1918. E&E finally bought the entire stock in 1922 or 1923 (most of the E&E character steins you see were the RuG character steins).
The book claims that Kilian Beuler, locally born in Höhr, was an artist at RuG. Roland Henschen wrote a column in The Tri-State Trader in 1975 in which he stated the Girmscheid steins' containing the initials "KB" stood for Karl Beuler. Are Karl and Kilian the same person as has been assumed in the past? Roland's column also stated that Karl Beuler died somewhere between 1912 and 1915. His information was based on discussions with residents of Höhr-Grenzhausen. If they are the same person, it seems unlikely that Karl or Kilian would have time to quit work at RuG to go to work at Girmscheid given the dates of death for Karl and the demise of RuG during WWI. Could the artist KB have done work for both firms at the same time? Could Girmscheid have purchased the molds from either RuG or E&E?
I have posed these questions to Roland and will post his reply when I receive it. I also sent him pictures of four steins shown in the Girmscheid catalog on The Beer Stein Library (membership required to view the catalog, but it does have some great stein catalogs to view). Girmscheid mold 328 is signed by KB and shows card players. This scene is shown on a stein with the same 328 mold number in the RuG 1914 catalog, although it is not the same stein. Girmscheid mold 332 (Frank has removed it from the catalog because of these questions)is signed GK and shows a man and woman hunting. This appears to be the same stein and mold number as shown in the RuG 1914 catalog (different pewter lids though). Girmscheid mold 634 is a 1,0 L scene of Siegfried's homecoming with a figural lid. The same scene and lid with the same 634 mold number is shown in the RuG 1914 catalog, although the catalog dose state that it is 1/2 L. I am not sure if these three Girmscheid steins contain a Girmscheid mark. Girmscheid mold 931 is a scene of a woman with a painter's pallet (I have this stein and it does contain the two-story house mark of Girmscheid). The RuG book also shows this same stein with the same 931 mold number as a RuG stein.
I have tried to contact the author of the RuG book to clarify these apparent discrepencies. It has been a month since I sent an e-mail, but if I do receive a reply I will post it.
Some of the steins in the RuG 1914 catalog appear to have the twisted vine handle that is an attribute of the Girmscheid steins. If anyone has a RuG marked stein that has a twisted vine handle of the initials GK or KB, please help us by posting pictures of the steins to help us solve this mystery.
