Hello steinaholics! I'm hoping that someone can help me with locating a resource for identifying this wonderful pewter stein. (see photo below) I was told that it is 18th century and European in origin. There are quite a few marks on the stein: On the handle is a mark showing a shield On the lid are two marks- on is a lion rearing up on the rear legs with tail raised. The second is a castle turret, which looks like a rook from a chess game, with a star on each side. On the bottom there are two marks of a winged angel blowing a trumpet. I read that these may indicate it is French in origin. Also on the bottom is text which I think includes the French word "fabrique" which means "made". The text is aligned one word or partial word over the other and where it is illegible I have put question marks. FABRI QUE MARCH? BAU? MO??? D??? In the last two words, I'm not certain of how many letters there are. The final mark on the bottom is the largest. It is in an oval. There is a central human figure in center of the oval wearing a dress or flowing robe, with what is either angel wings or possibly long sleeves. In the hand which is on the left (or the angels right) are a pair of hanging scales. In the other hand is what looks to be a dagger or sword. On the ground on the left side are two blooming flowers and on the ground on the right is a small winged griffon or other winged creature. At the top to the left and right of the angel's head, there is what appears to be additional text stamped over the top of this mark. The word on the left is double stamped and the word on the right is not. The word on the left is "BLOCK" and the word on the right is "ZIN" The stein is large, more than 5" in diameter and 9" tall. (someone liked that ale!) And what's really interesting, on the inside of the tankard on the bottom, there is a raised flower about 2" in diameter! Like a prize for drinking allllllll that ale!! Here is the photo below. If anyone can direct me to a good resource for identification or has some ideas on it's origin, I would love to hear from you! You're welcome to answer me here or email me at talesofthesevenseas@hotmail.com Thanks!! Claire
