Thank-you for you help Jerry! I tried to get some up close photos with my digital camera and it just can't get them. I do have a friend who is a professional photographer that did some very close up work for a museum here in CA that I was involved with and I think I'll contact her and see if I can get her to take a couple of close-ups for me. Looking at the touchmarks in bright light, darn it, I can't tell if I'm looking at PABRI or FABRI! I'm a little hesitant on making a sketch, for fear of embelishing what I THINK it ought to say where it is not clear. There is absolutely not a second N on ZIN. But having transcribed several documents from the 1770's and 1790's I know that the spellings were not as standardized as they are today. I'm guessing that perhaps if the stein is French and they were using the German ZIN tin indicator...who knows how they might have spelled it. BLOCK is the only part that is double stamped so it is definitely an additional over-stamp to the lead-free angel mark. The whole word BLOCK is repeated, so this was a stamp of that whole word, not individual letters. I'd guess the same of ZIN. I looked at the construction of the stein and it is definitely hand-crafted rather than something manufactured by machine. Inside the tankard if you look closely, you can see where the bottom was soldered to the sides, where the handle was soldered to the body and inside, you can see what appear to be the seams where two pieces were soldered together form the body, although these are completely invisible from the outside and it looks like a lot of care was taken to make the solder joints as invisible as possible, even on the inside. To my untrained eyes, I would guess this stein is hammered by the look. When you look feel the walls of the body and inside the lid, you can feel what I think are hammer marks. I went and felt some of the bowls of the silver spoons I have which date to 1773 and the look and surface feel are very much the same. The "hammer divets" are more obvious in the back by the handle and less obvious by the front side. You can see them more clearly inside than out. I closed my eyes and felt carefully with my fingertips and it feels like they are on every part of the body. I really think it is a hammered piece for there to be that much of this within the curved portions of the stein. On close examination of the styling, there are little subtle inconsistancies that aren't noticeable at first. I don't know the first thing about stein construction, so I'm making observations based on just what I'm seeing with no prior knowlege. More thoughts on this are very welcome!!
