Jody — Lohengrin was a Knight of the Holy Grail whose tale originated in medieval times (ca. 800-1400 A.D.). The costuming of the figures on the steins in question (Girmscheid 155,157 & 189), clearly indicates a much earlier period in time. For example, similar costuming may be found on Girmscheid No. 93 (also a "GK" design), which depicts the departure of the German warrior Hermann from his wife Tusnelda prior to the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9 A.D. While it's possible that "GK" intended to depict some historic event or legend on Nos. 155, 157 & 189, it clearly wasn't the legend of Lohengrin, and I suspect it's far more likely that he was simply trying to graphically represent the long-standing relationship between Germans and their beer, i.e., "Long live German song, long live German drink".
