I stand corrected, these are probably not ewers. German Stoneware: 1200-1900 by David Gaimster shows a couple of these with screw necks (no lid is shown. He labels them a standing costrel. While they are similar to a ewer, the screw on lid means they were intended for carrying. A costrel is defined in my Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary as "a flat usually earthenware container for liquids with loops through which a belt or cord may be passed for easy carrying - called also pilgrim bottle." The one on the left looks like it may have loops on the circle and the one on the right looks like it may have loops at the bottom of the neck. Can Ron S confirm this?
