There should be some maker's mark on the bottom of the stein. You can go to the SCI home page, click on LIBRARY and scroll all the way down to Marks--A Beginning. You can also go to the next article on Beer Stein Marks, by Les Hopper. This is much longer and requires Adobe Acrobat.
Without a picture or determining the maker, it is pretty hard to help you.
That said, West/Western Germany was the period from October 1949 - October 1990. Your stein was made sometime during that period. Steins made post WWll are considered Modern/Contemporary. Most steins made during that period were mass produced for the souvenier/tourist trade and have modest value. If you look on ebay, you might be able to find your stein.
