The stein was a gift from Max Basler, a professional (Diploma) Engineer (Ing.) to his dear (s./l. = seinem lieben) Architect friend ????? in friendly remembrance (frdl. Erg. = freudnlich Erinnerung) ????.

It's tempting to interpret the odd character as an S, not an L, as this would make sense for the date - "S.S. 1913" would be summer semester, 1913. But I don't recognize Semmerling.
