Is it 1870s or late 1800s?

Good morning all, I have been considering the purchase of some old steins from an establishment that I have had transactions with in the past. Unfortunatly I can only describe the pertinent details of this one particular stein. It's really an exercise for me, and maybe other members. This is a .5 litre stein, saltglaze, blue on gray, a scroll with words included, a brewer's star, floral deco, what appears to be a stylized griffin. The back ground (gray) is stippled. The top of the stein contains a band in relief, linked spheres, typical, (I think) of HR and later Merkelback. It also contains a series of beaded rings top and base. However, my question is this, when viewing the photo of the stein, there is a bit of text describing it and mentions that this is circa 1895. Now the handle top attachement is near the rim, not allowing for a shank. Its an open faced hinge, the lower part of the handle ends in a curl. according to John McGregor's "Westerwald Steinzeug 1600-1914" article which mentions that the curled lower handle attachement first appeared in 1600-1720 and then in early to mid 1870s Reinhold Hanke and Borho, Zinkl and Co. used curled lower handle attachement on some of their "Historismus" pieces. Regarding the pewter attachement, providing that I did understand what I read, he states that the shankless attachement belongs to the earlier steins, which would be early to mid 1870s. Can someone confirm or correct me if I'm wrong. I do want to know. Thank you for your time and have a good day, Regards, Tony B
