These "Germany" or "Made in Germany" marks and let us not forget "Made in West Germany", this last one is self explanatory, in use between 1949 and 1990. The other two however I find frustrating. If I remember correctly, the Import/Export Act was introduced around 1887-1891. Is it possible that since then, some, or all manufacturers produced identical steins, some with the incised "marks", for export, some for in-country sales, without the marks. The reasoning for this observation is that I purchased a MR stein circa early 1900s with no mark. Granted the original owner might have brought it to North America, or gave it to someone and eventually it came to our shores. Another example, I purchased three King-Werk Limitat series, on the bottom of each one is a very delicate clear decal identifying the company and stating that it was Made in Germany. I understand that some of these were not originally meant for the North American market. I'm still very much a novice at this, but my opinion is that of all the various ways to identify the age of a stein, the marks are really the very least important and maybe, even irrelevant. Thanks for your time, with regards, Tony B
