If the factories had records we wouldn't be doing research to figure some of this stuff out. There are prtctically no records for most factories and the civil records were lost in many cases also. There were things like WWI and especially WWII that destroyed much of what we could use. No one could forsee that there would be crazy people collecting these things in the future and probably most old records were simply destroyed when the factories no longer had any use for them.
