Actually, the stein in The Encyclodpedia of Character Steins looks just like the Stein of the Month, except it is 1/2 L and the base mark is as described and has a 801 number on the base. Is anyone familiar with this manufacturer's mark? There is no form number 801 in my Mettlach books, but their numbers are form numbers so that the same number could be used for different sizes. I'll ask Jim DeMars compare his stein to this one.
