The stein in the EOCS (fig 266) has the same type of lid that was used on British manufactured steins. Note the hinge is on the lid itself and no pewter connection to to the handle. The stein will have a pewter ring under the lid around the top of the body and the lid is hinged to that ring. The mark shown appears to be a British Registry Mark. The diamond shape was used between 1842 & 1883. The IV at the top of the diamond indicates that the item registered was made from ceramic (vs. wood, glass, or metal) material. There should be more symbols incised in the diamond which would indicate the specific date of registration, but I assume it was illegible and that is why Dr. Manusov did not indicate the remainder of the basemark.
