The word "Handgemalt" means handpainted, and it's appearance on the bottom of a stein is a clear indication that the stein is relatively modern. The term would be an anachronism on a piece manufactured in the 19th century, as hand painting was the only choice. The date of 1862 is a second indicator of modern manufacture. If you look closely you will probably see the word "Seit" in front of this number, which means "since 1862". Again, this is an expression which only took on significance many years after the factory began operations.
