Thewalt is a family name, and they have founded several different factories in the Westerwald region of Germany. The firm of Albert Jacob Thewalt is in business today. The Westerwald region is rich in high quality clay, and there were hundreds of pottery firms operating there in the late 1800's. The name Westerwald is sometimes used to refer to the blue and gray saltglazed stoneware for which the region is perhaps best known.
