I have become fairly adept at identifying original regimental steins from reproductions; however, I do become confused when the body of the stein is obviously original but the deckel appears inappropriate. An example -- an infantry deckel on an artillery stein is pretty easy to spot. However, on many of the older steins (pre 1905), the deckel will not carry any representation of the origin of the stein (infantry, artillery, Jager, cav, Fus., etc.) and be plain. How does one verify that this "plain" deckel is indeed correct versus being a replacement?
