I use a sky-blue cloth as a backdrop, seems to work well although I don't think it is necessarily any better than any other. Use natural light and flash, any incandescent light in the room will create a yellowish glare. I try to hold the camera so the flash is positioned above the lens, this casts the shadow from the flash downward where it does not interfere with the image. For a straight-sided piece I usually shoot at a slight downward angle. This keeps the flash from reflecting directing back into the lens where it flares. This technique is especially important to remember when taking closeups with macro lens, for example, of base markings. Take at least one side view of the stein which shows the entire handle.

Don't send huge picture files. High resolution is fine if you are going to print the photo, but for viewing on the internet, basic resolution is less than 100 dpi, anything else is wasted. Most photo-editing software has a control to resize or resample digigal images for the Internet.
