There are no useful books in English about German student society steins, although there are a couple of old books which deal with the life of a student at German university. I have a compilation of references, will dig it out and post the information later.
One book you might consider is an auction catalog from 1991. It has some introductory text and hundreds of photos of student items. I have the book for sale, and can provide a translation of the introduction. Visit http://webpages.charter.net/wvogdes/forsale.htm then link to page1.
If you are a member of SCI, there was an article in the June 2003 issue which dealt with the basics of student society beer steins.
