Mostly 20 years of studying the products of the Westerwald Stoneware factories. There are physical clues that tie each piece to the factory where they were manufactured. Handle styles, varius marks including capacity marks, the color of the cobalt and manganese under glazes, whether the stein has a stepped base or a flat one. No one thing is definitive, but taken together they will usually point to the manufacturer. If you have an eye for style a little study should do the job, however many people simply can't see the differences, and no amount of explanation helps.
