The best known manufacturer of football character steins was T. Maddocks Sons of Trenton NJ who took a patent in 1905. The steins are made of porcelain in the shape of a football with a flared base, and they display either a pennant with one or more letters indicating the school, or of a football player in uniform. They were hand-painted, and the colors and letters were easily modified to correspond to a particular school. According to "Character Steins, A Collector's Guide" examples are known for "Cornell, Chicago, Columbia, Amherst, Harvard, Princeton, Knox, Northwestern, Yale, University of PA, Pittsburgh, as well as many others." Steins by this company frequently have the company's trademark including their name on the base. "The Beer Stein Book" gives an estimate of $400-500 for a stein in mint condition depicting a passer.
