A lot of steins are unmarked. Sometimes, there's a way to tell manufacturer by the mold number, by the font used to print the number, by the handle, by the general decor style. The steep learning curve only gets steeper as you think you know something and then find exceptions to the rule in every case. When I guessed M&R, the knowledge came from looking at a lot of steins over the years (ebay is a great place to start) -- and using fuzzy logic. Sometimes it takes years to find a relative to a stein that can be identified. Sometimes, you just get lucky.
