The lid may be original to the stein. Many Mettlachs have pewter lids which were actually more expensive than the inlaid lids back when the stein was made. The inlaid lids were usually installed at the factories to keep costs down. Today the collectors usually prefer the inlay to the all pewter and as a result the price may be a bit lower, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and quite often there will be little or no diffence as long as the lid is original compliments rather than detracting from the stein itself. In the case of the 2235 a quality pewter lid shouldn't detract much at all.
