Dick, A replaced lid usually has been cut and heated on the strap portion holding onto the handle and can be seen by the color change of the pewter or if the pewter hasn't beeen repaired by a professional repairman. But with chemical treatment to pewter repair it is almost impossible to tell. To me if a lid has been replaced and it is of the proper time frame it doesn't change the value except to the puriest stein collector. I believe you really want to know about White's Utica pewter lids and the one place to look to see if it is an original lid is where the tang meets the lid, on the outside is is marked withXXXX at this point and was thought to have been a trade mark of the Pewter Guild.
