Hi Debbie, Most stein collectors learn in exactly this manner. Just learn from your mistakes. This stein says "Made in Western Germany" Western Germany existed from 1949 to 1989 so your stein was made during that time frame. In stein collecting, anything made after WWII (1945-date) is considered contemporary or modern. The term "OLD is usually reserved for steins made before 1850. The majority of steins collected by collectors are ca.1860-1910. Unless they collect modern steins and there are many who do. Also you should try the SCI library site here. There is a great deal of information you could find for yourself. For pricing info use e-bay to see what other people are getting for steins like the ones are inquiring about.
