The 1809 is made from a combination of two different decorative techniques, so called etching and colored relief. The colors in this stein are actually "in" this stein, as different colored clay slips were used to make the scene. The relief design on #1157 was either applied by hand or formed by applying the light-colored clay to the design portions of the mold, and then adding the dark clay of the body. The first was more difficult and more expensive. While the difference in value today is due to scarcity and relative appeal to collectors. If you could see the two steins side by side you would appreciate how different they really are.
