I don't believe any stein maker would make a solid base 2 1/2 inches thick. The weight would be an obvious drawback, and the uneven shrinking of the clay during firing would probably cause big problems. The normal solutions to creating a taller body than the capacity would normally suggest are (1) a recessed base or (2) a hollow base. If the base is hollow, there will be a small hole visible somewhere to allow air to expand and escape during firing.
