I believe it was John McGreggor (sorry if misspelled, John) that had an exclosed bottom (without a hole to allow for air expansion). The stein had a patent that John had traced to Girmscheid -- although the body didn't seem to be typical Girmscheid to me. Sounds like trickery! I can't figure how they could do it without an expansion hole.
John, do you remember this? Can you shed any light? Thanks.
