For what it's worth, after tracking down the site Marc mentions, which describes a student drinking game (not much like "musical chairs), I was able to locate the song by which the game is played — "Ich bin der Furst von Thoren" — in my handy little Kommersbuch (i.e., student song book). Given the available evidence, it seems pretty clear to me that Marc's conclusion is correct and that "der Furst von Thoren" is a generic character (much like our own "Farmer in the Dell"), and not an actual human being.
