Obviously Bartlebys doesn't collect beer steins. That definition is as broad as it is in order to click with the largest number of people. For the most part the English drank their beer from pewter mugs that were never intended to have lids. The Germans drank their beer from lidded containers of many shapes and sizes, each having its own name depending on the region. Stein simply means stone which the majority of old drinking vessels were made of (stoneware). In some places in Bavaria they actually called these pieces "steins" or stones. A moustache mug is so called, as Walt pointed out, because it has a specific pourpose, that of protecting a moustache. Those who collect antique drinking vessels would NEVER consider this to be a stein.
