My recollection is that it was sometime during the 1960s that Dresden began prohibiting use of the city name on ceramics that weren't made there. Given that and the fact that Budich's earlier logo had the word "Dresden" spelled out, it's pretty certain that the intent of the "D" was to indicate "Dresden" without actually saying it.
