Marc — It's not necessarily true that a .4L Schierholz character stein is different from the .5L version. Schierholz sometimes created a "smaller" capacity by simply lowering the capacity line from the normal location. I personally own a "rare" .4L Schierholz Alpine Man stein that is nothing more than the .5L stein with the capacity line dropped a few centimeters. As you may have noted in the Beer Stein Library, the real .4L Moltke stein has a clearly distinquishable color scheme, which should make identification fairly easy with a photo.
