The Westerwald stoneware firm of Simon Peter Gerz has been in operation since the 1860's, although this stein is relatively modern. Any stein which says "handgemalt" ("hand painted")is making an attempt to link modern production to earlier times. Most steins produced in recent years were made for the tourist or gift trade, and they feature traditional bucolic or tavern scenes. Because so many pieces were made in the same style, and brand new pieces are still available in gift and souvenir shops, these steins generally sell for less than their value new. Assuming all of these steins are modern, you might want to let family members choose which ones they might like to have.
