There is an earlier version of the Fox as a Hunter stein. However, it is mold number 727 rather than 827. Girmscheid used 727 for a Niagara Falls souvenir stein, so either the earlier version was not by Girmscheid or the mold number was reissued. The earlier version is much more distinctive in facial expression and the body mold is slightly different. It has feathered prey above and below the game bag. Also the handle is the fox's tail and is brown rather than the cream colored handle of 827. I suspect that the earlier version was also by Girmscheid due to it's having the typical Girmscheid character stein thumblift, however I don't know that it has ever been identified in any catalog. The only price documentation I have is from last June. It was listed on ebay with a starting bid of $50 and bidding ended at $180.00 with Reserve Not Met.
