Jody — I'm guessing that you're talking about the ubiquitous Girmscheid "Katalog F". If so, while it's not dated, the late Les Hopper, a recognized Girmscheid expert, was of the opinion (with which I'm in full agreement) that its publication date was a lot closer to 1970 than 1950. The "circa 1960" date in the Beer Stein Library for Girmscheid #827 is based in the fact that virtually no German character steins were being produced in the post-WWII period until that time. My personal opinion is that there started to be a resurgence in character stein manufacturing after that date due in large part to the considerable success of the Schultz & Dooley characters, first produced by Würffel & Müller in 1959.
