Hi folks, just some thoughts on questions and answers prompted by several recent threads.
No reference book, catalog, or beer stein information site is complete, or without error. While much is known about several factories, more has been lost to history. Just because it is published in a book doesn’t make it correct.
None of us have a crystal ball, well most of us don’t, so photos added to an inquiry on this site will probably get you a prompt and more accurate answer. Photos, if pertinent to the answer, can also be included.
If you are not exchanging information with other collectors you should be. Remember, two heads, or even three or four, are better than one. This site is an excellent place to exchange information. Everyone has an opinion, some actually have useful information they are willing to exchange, and never underestimate the value of a Devil’s Advocate. Any additional information that can be given, that pertains to the question asked, should be welcomed. People should not be called to task for including additional information. Let the information speak for itself. If you disagree with the information, present your alternative, if you have one, as part of the information exchange.
Unless you are preparing an article for publication, using existing records, or previously published research, you will find that most of your research is going to be theoretical. All of the scientific disciplines depend on published theories to share insights to unanswered questions. As long as your “theory” fits all the known facts, you should feel comfortable in publishing it, or sharing it with us on “Stein Talk,” but you must include the facts upon which you base your theory. If you feel you have to wait for proof, you may never publish anything, or even offer your ideas and fellow stein collectors will be deprived of your insights, insights that could be crucial to solving some mystery.
Differing opinions at least show that some people are thinking about these questions and that is healthy for the hobby.
