Hi Carolyn. When collectable steins, such as yours, were first manufactured, the pewter lidded steins were the expensive ones. Stein collectors to this day will gladly pay a premium on a stein with an inlaid lid. As to its vintage, some of the information to be found on the bottom of your stein is not visible because of glare I guess. The easiest way to show you how to identify its age is to refer you to an article written by Walt Vogdes. Go to the SCI Home Page, click on "Library", scroll down, way down, you will find an article entitled "The Essential Mettlach Marks".
