When a stein comes out of the mold, it need to be "prepared" for firing, i.e., mold lines must be removed and minor flaws corrected. The artisans who do this work are among the most skilled in the factory, but also the most closely monitored. In most factories, they are (were) required to add their "mark" to the bottom of the stein for tracking purposes. This mark can take the form of a letter, a number, or even an abstract geometric symbol (like a square or a triangle). In all likelihood, the letter symbols on the bottom of HR (M&W) steins were added for that purpose.
