Hi John: thanks for the info. The lid is flat and smooth with the 1874 in large letters stamped into it. I failed to study the thumb lift or see the bottop markings as I wasn't interested at the time. The crack on the drinking rim is small or hairline but nevertheless a crack. A quick look at The Steinbook only mentions steins from that region up to 1870 but not beyond. I did buy a modern stein looks like from King that has a ceramic inlaid top. Can I take a picture and send it to you or SteinTalk to get s a little history? Chuck
