Hi Tony,
High German is what you find in the books and newspapers today. I think it is spoken only in the region of Hannover, while the rest of Germany speaks different dialects, that are more or less comprehensible. At the time of Shakespeare, people spoke Middle High German, a language that is very difficult to understand even for us now. My wife is the expert there, as far as I remember it is closer to English than High German today.
