Walt, Thanks again for your help, I'm so grateful.
But I have to tell you the whole story. I found this stein in antique shop, unfortunately 50 miles from my home. "Mettlach stein, $895" was written on the stein's tag. I hold it in my hands and looked for any marks on the bottom. There was the Mettlach castle mark and something else. There was the form # 2885 as well. I had some doubts about the first "8", "3" or "8", but I wrote 2885 down in my pocket notebook. On the next day I studied your article "The essential Mettlach Marks" and lookikg on the picture #6 (the writing for 2339) I understood that I possibly mixed 3 and 8.
So I came to four options for the genuine form # (2335, 2385, 2835, and 2885). Then I went to a local library, took the Kirsner's book about steins to find out more about this stein. The only information I got was that this stein is not #2835 (because the latter was shown in the book and had a cameo style.) I decided to ask professionals and put my questions on the SCI. You know what was later. Now I got a real puzzle. Of course it will be solved when I'll visit again the antique shop.
Although I have a weak memory (I can't remember many details about the stein), I remember exactly that the 1st digit was 2, the 4th - 5, and two digits in the middle 3 or 8 each. Additional details: 1) the lid had a conical form; 2) the thumblift had design with a small figure of man taking only the part of it; 3) the body was totally covered relief (?) scenes gradually going each to other. The scene locating on top part of the body next to the handle shows somebody looking (and possibly crying) outside from window. That's all I remember.
Walt, thanks again, Peter
