Based on your description, I'm guessing that the stein you saw was #2382, the Thirsty Rider or Thirsty Knight (see Kirsner). This has been a very popular Mettlach stein, with an interesting scene of a Rider sneaking into a Keller to enjoy tapping a keg, then being surprised by the owner, then riding out of town with the owner shaking his fist after him. The figural lid is in the shape of the rooftop tower of the inn. The half-liter size, perfect condition, is valued at $725, the one-liter size at $1000, but both of these valuations have suffered from a slumping Mettlach market. For a one-liter version the price you saw is about right in today's market.
