I'm relatively new to stein collecting, so forgive any ignorance i show.
I recently picked up a second hand stein, and I've been unable to find out much about it. It's made by Goebel, mainly blue on grey, saltglazed. It's missing its lid. Here are some photos: http://www.photodump.com/viewer/littlepiggy/stein_front493.html http://www.photodump.com/viewer/littlepiggy/stein_side.html http://www.photodump.com/viewer/littlepiggy/stein_bottom.html
The decoration on the side seems pretty standard, but the design on the front is intriguing. It bears the words "COBURG" and "Friendship" and, within a shield, a side head view of a black man with a large hoop earring.
I know there is a Coburg in Germany, though the English word below leads me to think it might be referring to another Coburg, such as the one in Ontario (I picked up the stein in Ontario, but a ways from Coburg). I'm rather baffled as to what the African-looking fellow has to do with any of it.
I'm doubting that I'll find much to satisfy my curiousity, but I welcome any suggestions you kind folk may have.
Thanks!
