Actually, the decoration number IS shown on this stein. It is handpainted in black, best read by turning the image upside down from the way it appears in your photo. The numbers kind of run uphill, but it is obviously 548. The form number was impressed into the base before the stein was fired in the kiln. But at that time the decoration had not been added. Later, the decoration was painted and the decoration number added to the base. The decoration number on Mettlach steins is never (?) incised, it is always stamped or handpainted on the base.
