Shannon — Your first set of photos depict a stein made by Albert Thewalt in what is now Höhr-Grenzhausen. The "A" mark on the bottom is actually an A with a T forming the cross piece. The verticle line of the T isn't visible in the photo, but perhaps you can see it on the stein itself. Based on it's mold number (448), I'd put the date of manufacture somewhere around 1905. I looked at some of the lid text photos, but I'm not sure that I could have made out the handwriting even if it was in English. Maybe someone else with better transcription skills will be able to help you with that.

I thought at first that your second stein was an early Diesinger, but there appears to be a mold number (171) shown in your rear view photo and that number doesn't match the example in the Beer Stein Library's Diesinger catalog. In all other regards, the stein is pretty generic, and might have been prodiced by any one of several Westerwald makers. Regarding the text, the phrase "Sieh dich für" actually translates more accurately to something like "beware", so the entire phrase would read "Beware, foam is no beer." - fjl
