The Thewalt stein is a good example of NOT relying on engraved dates to date a stein. The date on the lid is 1892 and the Thewalt wasn't founded until the following year, 1893 and didn't produce steins until 1897, after they hired Wilhelm Kemp (Kamp?) as their designer.
