Hi Frank,
I think you're right with that the engraving was done after the fact. It's improbable that they replaced the lid so early after purchasing the stein.
Shannon, I once got an email from an American collector who wanted to be polite by writing in German. He therefore used a translation program. I did not notice that at first and from the content thought I had received a threat by a terrorist (no kidding). I recently saw on ebay Germany another example for what these programs can do. In the German text, the seller wrote: "Allerbeste Erhaltung", which means something like "best preservation possible". His program obviously didn't know the word "allerbeste" and therefore split it into "all-" (space) - "-erb-" (inheriting) and "-este" (estonian) and the result was "preservation space-inheriting Estonian"... .
Kind regards Marc
